Fashionably Four Eyes

“I was walking down the street wearing glasses when the prescription ran out.” ~ Steven Wright

I was in first grade, having seen blurred blobs on the board where my vocabulary words were suppose to be for months. I shrugged my shoulders, I got up so I could get closer never thinking – and definitely not seeing – a thing out of place, dreaming of Nancy Drew and Boxcar Children in my six year old mind.

This went on for weeks, until a routine visit to the doctor, had my primary care doing an eye check where I discovered I needed glasses. My big sister and my dad wore them all the time and the rest of my family had them as well.

I thought cool, and picked out a pair of spotted blue spectacles. At six years old, I didn’t have a love hate relationship, I was innocent to the cruelty of kids, and the woes of fashion and glasses being “uncool.”

That quickly changed as I got older and my eye sight continuously got worse. Every few months, new thicker lenses. I even had to wear them when  I skated which was a trial and tribulation attempting to spin and and jump with them on.

At eleven years old, I cried uncle and exclaimed, “No more!” I begged my parents for contacts which they acquiesced, and shoved my glasses into the bowels of my night stand happily saying, “Buh-bye!”

For the next ten years, I happily forgot I was technically four eyes, surprising even close friends when they discovered I was blind as a bat without my contacts.

Literally, I was. Unfortunately when I arrived in my twenties, and the passage of old age upon me, my eyes needed a desperate break from wearing contacts.

Lamenting donning thick lenses again, I was pleasantly surprised when in the era of technology, glasses had also been improved, along with cooler more fashionable lenses.

Trying on frames, I actually had a difficult time deciding on which ones I wanted and finally settled on a pair by Kate Spade.

I may have had to be four eyes again, but at least I would be styling!

I am still not entirely comfortable wearing my glasses. But I don’t hate them uas much as I use too.

Are you a glasses or contacts kind of person?

  1. I feel your pain sister! I have to wear my contacts all the time now otherwise I feel like im gropping about in a fog ☁️. I have a pair of glasses that I used for emergencies like running out of contacts or when my eyes are irritated. But I recently had my eyes examined and I found out my previous optometrist had given me an incorrect prescription about twice the power of my contacts for the glasses 😳 Had to resort to wearing lenses full time for now 😪 I liked being able to switch up whenever I wanted though 🤓 regardless of how nerdy I looked 😜

    1. LMAO. I can totally relate to the gropping about in the fog part! Oh no! That stinks! Hopefully they can correct it quickly! That is the bright side! I have a bunch of interviews in the coming weeks…I might be bringing out the glasses! Lol! ❤

    1. I can imagine! My nephews do that with my jewelry and hair! Can not have anything dangling around them! I agree! Wearing mascara and glasses usually ends with it on the lenses and not on my eye! lol. ❤

  2. Oh my gosh your first grade story is a spot on. That’s exactly how I found out too! Fast forward to second grade and my parents picked out ” Harry Potter” glasses for me that it became my nickname for awhile. I’m definitely a contacts person! I can’t wear glasses too long on my face as it starts to feel uncomfortable or causes some acne on my nose 😦

  5. Love this post! I have learned to embrace my glasses as well, although I do alternate between frames and contacts. Have you ever thought about getting eye surgery? I’ve been thinking about it but I don’t know many people who have gotten it.

    1. Thanks hun! I have. My brother got it about ten years ago (he actually had it done in Canada before it was legal in the US) and it was a success has not had to wear glasses since! It scares me though, because I have heard that if they mess up you then have to wear glasses (whether that has changed or not I don’t know) I should just take the plunge and at the very least look into it more:) Thank you again for reading! ❤

    1. Oh no I am sorry to hear that! I absolutely love Kate Spade. She not only has fun colors and designs, but also fun shapes so you can really channel your fashionista and find ones that are perfect for you! ❤

    1. That stinks! I can understand that. When I am sick I will wear my glasses all the time. And when I switch back to contacts I always feel the phantom placement of my glasses for days. lol. Thank you for reading! ❤

  6. I love glasses and also adore people who use them
Sometimes ago I pretended to use glasses at school but then the teachers noticed that I’d always bend the glasses to see clearly without the glasses and I was in big trouble

  7. I love glasses and don’t even own contacts! My eyesight has been worsening over time too but I love how glasses give you an instant different look (and improved vision obvi) 😉 Great piece!

  8. I love both! I usually try to match my choice of contacts or glasses with my outfit. Glasses give a completely different vibe than contacts when it comes to fashion (in my opinion). Loved your post!
