The Modern Renaissance Woman

Happy Birthday Mommy Sutton!

“Because of my unique experience as my mom’s child, the beginning of my journey was more about me trying to figure out who I was on my own. My mom is one of the greatest moms and so supportive of all my siblings and of all of us being who we are, and not who she wanted us to be.” Tracee Ellis Ross

I know, I know, everyone says their mom is amazing. But mine really is. I could not have asked for a more supportive, loving, sassy mother.

I know where I get my jet setting on the go ways, from the time I was born she would lug me to my sibling’s games, concerts, shows, and varying events. And when I began skating, she would come to practices and sit in the freezing cold arena knitting away. Every so often nodding or applauding when I did something new or was excited about landing a jump. She was never a crazy skating mom, micromanaging the coaches but she was always supportive. She was there for every injury; concussions, sprained wrists and fractured feet.

She would hand make skating costumes and help out at competitions and galas. She even use to make my own Halloween costumes. Their were times I admit, that I would have preferred a commercialized piece, but looking back now, I am truly lucky to have worn her creations, that weren’t just one of a kind, but also made with an abundance of love.

Growing up that was the most important part. We may not have gone on fancy vacations, or the most popular toys, but we had love and support. We had a Mom who was always there for us and to this day still is.

While there are times, I can definitely get frustrated with her (she IS old…Sorry Mom ;), I have and will always have her support.

I haven’t gone the most traditional route, with education, and my dreams might be a little unconventional, but I have ALWAYS had her support, encouraging me to follow my dreams, regardless how distant it might seem reaching them. She is my very own personal cheerleader. Despite hundreds of miles separating us, with out fail she always reads my blog posts, comments and likes, which is pretty good for someone who joined Facebook ONLY two years ago.

She has also shown me what true grace and poise looks like in the darkest of moments, and what it means to continue to live even when it isn’t always easy. Her love has always been and continues to be unconditional not just with her kids, but grand-puppies and grand kids.

So yes, my Mom is a pretty amazing woman. I could go on and on, but I will stop and leave this picture:
