“Let us never know what old age is. Let us know the happiness time brings, not count the years.” Ausonius
I don’t know many people who get excited about aging. Birthdays, yes. That number that changes each year, no. Yet, there are some great benefits that come with . No not the grey hair or the wrinkles. But inner wisdom that can only be gained by years lived. The most important one: Self Confidence.
A couple years ago, In typical New York fashion, I meant a good friend for boozy brunch. A professional ballerina, who told me that once she reached twenty-five, she had found acceptance with her weight and body. As a result she was thinner and happier then she had been before.
While thinness does not equate to happiness, the fact that she had reached acceptance with the body she had been given, does. It is incredible how when we find a point of contentment with in ourselves, stopping with the fads, dieting, and crazy exercising we actually do find happiness.
As I have gotten older and as a I approach my birthday that will make me much closer to thirty then twenty, I have realized, years later, that I understand what she was talking about.
With age comes wisdom, (I know I keep throwing that around) It isn’t just a cliche phrase. In this day and age, we have actresses like Julia Roberts and Hallee Berry owning their age. Owning who they are, and as a result they are happier then ever.
As you get older, you become more confidant with yourself. With your body. With your weight.
Yes you might have other aging concerns, but the contentment you have with your body is on a whole other level. Perhaps it is a resignation that after all these years, you just are not going to change it. Thus you better own that booty God gave you, or forever be unhappy with that junk in the trunk.
Or maybe you have just gotten tired of fighting it.
Or maybe the real happiness is, you have gained a confidence that in of itself makes you happy. And sexy.
The Magic Answer
I have mentioned before how during the summer I tend to lose weight without even trying. In fact I am on the other end of the spectrum going all out like it is an all you can eat buffet, usually of ice cream. Yet with the summer rays shining down on my mermaid heart, I am much happier. Much more content then I am during the winter.
Despite the ice cream and to many margaritas, I still find an inner confidence to rock.
I am not saying this is the magic answer. In fact, while I might have a Polly-Anna outlook, I do know people who each birthday want to run away and hide. I even joked when I turned the ripe old age of twenty-five I was no longer eligible for trophy wife status!
Confidence is sexiness
Not to channel another cliche line, but knowledge is power, and as you get older you realize how many of those fad diets were just gimmicks. Happiness really is the best medicine to make you younger. Botox, Surgery, creams, they do nothing when you are miserable. That people will drain you if you don’t surround yourself with good souls. You can be content or you can spend your whole life fighting yourself. You realize that ultimately YOU are in charge of creating your own happiness and in turn your life.
And that confidence my friends, is the ultimate form of sexiness.
How do you view aging? How do you gain that confidence? As always I love hearing from you guys!
