Fashionably Four Eyes: Part Two

Fashionably Four Eyes: Part One

A year ago June, I wrote a piece that went viral which not only shocked me (it is always interesting to me, what wins the post popularity contest) but even appalled my sense of vanity since a whole-lotta people saw me in my glasses. No, not cool 007 shades, but my specs with supped up special lenses, which while they bless my lil eyes with eyesight, are so thick, you can’t tell what color my eyes are!

I have been “Four Eyes” since I was six years old. It could have been my super hero moniker complete with some cool laser shooting action like Cyclone from X-Men. Creation of super hero aside, I unlike a lot of my friends who look amazing with glasses have abhorred mine, Thankfully due to enough begging and a skating career, my parents took pity on me when I was ten and let me get contacts. Oh was it a happy day!

Rest in Spectacle Heaven

I still needed glasses despite my love affair with contacts, and while I didn’t run to wear my passable Kate Spade specs that I had written so lovingly about, I also didn’t hate them either. They were a constant accessory all through my battle with lyme. They kept me company when I binge watched GoT and Shameless at night. It was one of those nights as I readied for bed, that the temple arm slipped from its mooring plopping oh so gently into my hand. Blind as a bat, I knew it was safer to inspect it in the morning when I had put my “eyes” in.

Once I could see in dawns early light I realized the problem was actually quite bad. What I originally thought was the screw and a quick fix, alas was not. I went to the optician where I had bought my glasses and was told there was nothing they could do.

The Quick Fix

I had a scheduled an eye-exam for the end of July and decided to wait to order a new frame until the appointment. Unfortunately it was months away and I NEEDED glasses in the interim. As much as I love my contacts, it isn’t healthy to wear them twenty-four-seven. (I wish!) Because of the shape and thickness of my lenses, finding a substitute frame was difficult, thankfully the optician was able to proxy my lenses into men’s frames giving a whole new definition to coke-bottle glasses!

I grudgingly made do, counting down the days until my appointment. The irony of anxiously waiting to get new glasses, when I hated them, was not lost on me. When the auspicious day came, I not only got a new (worse) prescription, but I happily picked my frames out in record time.

The Frames

I am a Kate Spade girl. Maybe it’s the name (and the fact she spells it correctly) or her designs, which are colorful and fun while still being modern. Whatever the reason, I made a beeline for her frames and in minutes had fallen in love with a pair of blush pink tortoise gems.

I have written a lot about my obsession with blush pink and the fact it is still going strong this season does not hurt. While blue is my favorite color after the bitter heartbreak of a LITERAL break of my aqua blue specs, I decided a complete revamp was in order.

With a tortoise pattern, the blackish brown mixed with the blush creates a subtle yet still eye popping (pun intended) look. The shape of the frame isn’t just a traditional squoval, but has a slight cat-eye that gives the frames character, while still keeping them versatile. The nose guards are integrated into the structure minimizing those sexy marks left on the bridge of your nose. It also came with a cute blue and green case that is as much fashionable accessory as it is functional.

Owning My Fashionably Four Eye-ism

These glasses just MIGHT have won me over. Since my illustrious eye glass wearing career started when I was six, I have had four pairs of glasses and I can honestly say these are by far my favorite! Gone are the days when “Four-Eyes” was a bad thing, and I lamented about my appalling vision. I will happily rock these. In fact who knows, maybe an eye glass wielding super hero is about to be discovered?

What do you think of these two-eyed beauties? Do you like glasses? Do you wear them?

  1. Ahhhh! I love those frames so much! I’m obsessed with anything tortoise shell print and Kate Spade never disappoints, so it’s a win-win! I have a similar story in that I have been wearing glasses since I was 5! For the last 25 years I have had to wear them CONSTANTLY; I can’t see a thing without them. I tried contacts when I was 18 and had the hardest time with them. My optometrist told me that my allergies were too severe to wear contacts for more than a day or 2 as it created massive discomfort. So I’ve let go of the idea of ever REALLY wearing them and have continued to embrace the glasses life! Maybe one day I’ll opt for lasik; but until then, glasses it is!

    1. Thank you so much hun! It really is! I made a beeline for them the moment I saw them.
The struggle is real! Confession time, when I first started wearing contacts, my brother had to put them in my eyes, because my fingers were to tiny the sense kept falling off. Lol.
That stinks! I do not know what I would do if I couldn’t wear contacts. Glasses actually give me a headache if I wear them multiple days in a row.
Good for you for embracing glasses! I am getting there! 🙂
Lasiks scares me. Maybe one day we will get it together lol. Thanks so much for reading and sharing your story! 🙂 ❤

  2. Those frames are so cute!! I recently had to go for another eye exam as well. Luckily, my prescription stayed the same, but I was keen on getting some new frames, as I had my old ones for three years 🙂

  3. I’ve had to wear glasses for about 8 or so years now and at first I had some thin, black and rather plain frames. Then I found my current pair of Hilfigers, dark brown almost black that glint specks of brown/red in the light. That’s when I realised glasses didn’t have to be just functional. Great post 🙂

Don't even get me started on the fact that they're Kate Spade, oh heavenly Gods are those the cutest frames I ever did see!!! I'm all about frames that make a statement, and those speak so loud that I can't even hear what anyone else is saying! 😉 Also I don't want to necessarily give it away but I'm totally waiting for a post with your haircut that I see on snap story!!!!
